Rewharewha (Flu)

Whānau Hauora

Protecting Our Whānau Through Winter

As the cooler months arrive, rewharewha (flu) becomes more common across our homes, workplaces, kura, and hapori. While flu can sometimes feel like “just a bad cold”, it can lead to serious māuiui and complications, particularly for our most vulnerable whānau.

Winter is a time when we naturally spend more time indoors and closer together, making it easier for viruses like flu to spread. By taking small steps to protect our hauora, we can help keep ourselves, our whānau, and our wider hapori safe.

Why Flu Protection Matters

Rewharewha (flu) is a contagious viral infection that can affect anyone. Symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, tiredness, vomiting, diarrhoea, and feeling generally unwell.

It can lead to serious complications including:

  • Pneumonia
  • Hospitalisation
  • Worsening of existing health conditions
  • In some cases, death

The risk of becoming seriously māuiui is higher for tamariki, kaumātua, hapū wāhine, and whānau living with long-term health conditions.

Protecting ourselves helps create safer spaces for those around us who may be more vulnerable.

Staying Well This Winter

There are simple ways we can help reduce the spread of rewharewha and support the wellbeing of our hapori:

Stay home when you are unwell
Giving your tinana time to rest and recover also helps prevent passing illness on to others.

Wash your hands regularly
Good hand hygiene is one of the easiest ways to reduce the spread of germs.

Cover coughs and sneezes
Using a tissue or coughing into your elbow helps protect those around you.

Look after your overall hauora
Rest, nourishing kai, staying hydrated, and supporting your tinana and wairua all help maintain wellbeing throughout the winter months.

Stay up to date with your flu vaccination
The flu vaccine is updated each year to provide protection against the strains expected to circulate. It is one of the key ways we can reduce the risk of serious māuiui and help protect our whānau.
