We’ve answered common pātai about screening services, eligibility, and costs, including cervical screening, breast screening, and prostate screening.

Free cervical screening may be available if you are:
● Māori or Pacific aged 25–69
● Aged 25–69 and hold a Community Services Card
● Aged 30+ or 70–74 and have never been screened
● Aged 30+ and have not been screened in over 5 years

The clinic team can help check eligibility. If eligibility criteria are not met, screening is available at a low cost of $28.

Free mammograms are available through BreastScreen Aotearoa for eligible wāhine if they are:
● Aged 45–69 years
● Not experiencing any breast symptoms (such as lumps, nipple changes, discharge, or skin changes)
● Not hapū or breastfeeding
● Have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months outside the programme
● Eligible for publicly funded healthcare in Aotearoa

Our clinic team can support with checking eligibility and can provide referrals where appropriate.

Knowing what is normal for your ū (breasts) is an important part of breast health. Regular self-checks can help identify any changes early.

Signs to look out for include:
● A new lump or thickening in the ū (breast) or armpit
● Changes in breast shape or size
● Unusual breast pain that does not go away
● A nipple that turns inward or looks different
● Crusty, flaky, itchy, or red skin around the nipple
● Discharge from the nipple (without squeezing)

If any changes are noticed, or if something does not feel normal, it is important to kōrero with a tākuta (GP) as soon as possible.

Costs for prostate checks may vary depending on the type of assessment or test required.

Some tāne with matepukupuku pakarūhi (prostate cancer) may not notice any symptoms.

Signs to look out for include:
● Blood in urine or semen
● Pain or burning when urinating
● Difficulty starting or stopping urine flow
● Weak flow, dribbling, or leaking
● Needing to urinate more often, especially at night
● Strong urge to urinate but only small amounts coming out

It is important to note that urinary symptoms are common as tāne get older and are usually caused by non-cancerous conditions such as an enlarged prostate. While these symptoms are often not serious, they should still be assessed by a clinician.

If any changes are noticed, it is important to kōrero with a tākuta (GP) as soon as possible.
