Our System of Care

Mauri Ora. Mauri Tau.

Our Approach to Wellbeing

At Te Manu Toroa, we follow the Tūāpapa Model of Care – our tangata whenua model and the foundation of everything we do.

Grounded in Te Ao Māori, it places whānau at the centre and supports them to direct their own hauora journeys in ways that reflect their aspirations for mauri ora (wellbeing) and mauri tau (prosperity).

It’s supported by a Treaty of Waitangi claim (WAI:1315), calling for greater Māori inclusion in decision-making and leadership. Inspired by the Alaskan NUKA model, we’ve shaped a care system that fits our culture and needs.

Guided by the values of tika, pono, and aroha, gifted to us by our local kaumātua, Tūāpapa offers a holistic approach to wellbeing. It supports the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of whānau.

Tika

We act with respect, honoring others and the relationships we share in every interaction.

Pono

We seek and share the truth with honesty, ensuring integrity guides how we see and respond to the world.

Aroha

We show empathy, care, and kindness, nurturing meaningful relationships even in challenging moments.

Whānau-Centred Care Team

At Te Manu Toroa, our whānau are supported by a dedicated, whānau-centred care team. This includes 1–2 GPs, nurses, and primary care practice assistants, along with support from clinical pharmacists, specialist community nurses, health improvement practitioners, and health coaches.

The approach is holistic: we awhi whānau with personalised care plans, advocacy, and connecting them to a range of additional support services — providing better access, higher-quality care, and a more positive experience for our whānau.

Whānau voice guides what support looks like,
when it happens, and how it is delivered.
